Description:
Exceptional 1863 GOD OUR TRUST
Half Dollar Pattern
Judd-338, PR65
1863 50C Half Dollar, Judd-338, Pollock-410, R.5, PR65 NGC.
Design.
The obverse die is from the Seated Liberty used for regular-issue coinage in 1863. The reverse die features the standard perched eagle design with the addition of a scroll with the motto GOD OUR TRUST inscribed. Struck in silver with a reeded edge.

Commentary.
Seven sets of original GOD OUR TRUST patterns are reported, with the other examples being restrikes (see commentary under Judd-340). The motto tested on this and other, related patterns was directly influenced by Secretary of the Treasury Salmon Chase, who wrote to Mint Director Pollock in November 1861: "The trust of our people in God should be declared on our national coins. You will cause a device to be prepared without unnecessary delay with a motto expressing in the fewest and tersest terms possible this national recognition." The GOD OUR TRUST motto was devised by either Longacre or Pollock shortly thereafter. Approximately two dozen examples of Judd-338 are extant and the present specimen is the finest certified.

Physical Description.
Vibrant, variegated shades of golden-rose toning cover virtually flawless surfaces. The strike is bold, with markedly pronounced definition of the Miss Liberty's features, the central shield, and all 13 stars. Definition of the reverse devices is consistently strong. NGC Census: 1 in PR65, none finer. PCGS Population: 8 pieces have been graded PR64, with none finer (12/08).

Provenance.
Ex: Lester Merkin private treaty transaction.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two.
