Description:
Splendid 1864 Copper Ten
Cent Pattern, Regular Dies
Judd-381, PR63 Brown
1864 10C Ten Cents, Judd-381, Pollock-449, Low R.7, PR63 Brown NGC.
Design.
Regular dies of the 1864 Seated Liberty dime. The dies are different from those that Breen described for the 1864 proof dimes. Struck in copper with a reeded edge.

Commentary.
Most of the current numismatic generation are of the opinion that these pieces are restrikes that were made in the early 1870s, from backdated dies. They were sold as part of sets that included the 1864 "With Motto" quarter (Judd-387), half dollar (Judd-392), and dollar (Judd-397). About a dozen examples are believed to exist.

Physical Description.
Rich violet and blue surfaces with traces of pinkish-orange mint color. The fields are deeply mirrored, and the devices are boldly defined. Both sides have a few insignificant hairlines reflected in the proof surfaces. NGC Census: 1 in PR63 Brown, 5 finer. PCGS Population: 1 in PR63 Brown, 9 finer (12/08).

Provenance.
Ex: Numisma '95 (RARCOA and David Akers, 11/1995), lot 2586.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two.
(PCGS# 60552)
