Description

1864 Cent in Copper, No L, Judd-356a
MS65 Red and Brown, Finest at PCGS

1864 1C Cent, Judd-356a, Pollock-427, Low R.6, MS65 Red and Brown PCGS. CAC. Struck from the regular Indian cent dies of 1864 on a thick planchet, supposedly in copper, and lacking the L in the ribbon. This piece is certified accordingly as Judd-356a by PCGS, but it would require elemental analysis, as www.USPatterns.com points out, to distinguish the various experimental alloys used. The site also notes that these pieces are "extremely rare showing any red color." The generous red appearing on this piece certainly puts it in the minority, as the first we have cataloged in Red and Brown, the only Gem in the color designation at PCGS, and the finer of only two so certified there; the other is MS64 Red and Brown (3/11). This piece is fairly well-struck, with minor flecks and good eye appeal. (PCGS# 72299)
