Description:
Intriguing 1864 Pattern Cent
Struck in Aluminum-Copper
Judd-353, MS62
1864 1C One Cent, Judd-353, Pollock-425, Low R.6, MS62 PCGS.
Design.
The regular obverse and reverse designs used to coin 1864 Indian cents, without L on the ribbon. Struck in an experimental aluminum-copper alloy with a plain edge.

Commentary.
Several different experimental alloys were tested in early 1864, including pieces in business strike and proof format. The Judd-353 attribution is tentative in the absence of specific elemental analysis. Various compositions were all based in copper, with 5% aluminum (Judd-354), 7.1% aluminum (Judd-353), or 10% aluminum (Judd-355), according to official records. Others were made with 10% tin (Judd-356) or 10% nickel (Pollock-426a), or with an alloy of 90% copper, 5% tin, and 5% silver (Judd-356a). It is obvious that none of the experimental alloys were suitable.

Physical Description.
PCGS has certified this piece, and it remains in a green-label holder. Both sides have satiny luster with a distinctive yellow-tan color. The strike is sharp, and both sides have prominent clash marks. PCGS Population: 2 in MS62, 4 finer. NGC Census: None in MS62, 4 finer (12/08).

Provenance.
Ex: Stack's (5/1998), lot 509.
