1864 50C Half Dollar, Judd-393, Pollock-461, R.8, PR67 PCGS....
Finest Known Superb Gem Proof 1864 Half Dollar Pattern, Judd-3931864 50C Half Dollar, Judd-393, Pollock-461, R.8, PR67 PCGS. Ex: The Pryor Collection. The obverse corresponds to the Seated Liberty design used to coin regular-issue 1864 half dollars. The reverse design is similar to the regular issue, but with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST on a scroll over the eagle's head. According to the website "USPatterns.com", this is an example of the so-called transitional half dollar using the reverse of 1866-1891. These and the other "with motto" patterns of this date, and also 1863 and 1865, are actually restrikes made in the early 1870s, and were offered with restrikes of the other denominations in complete sets. There are only two or three known examples of this variety, which were struck in aluminum. This Superb Gem is lightly toned in beautiful pale-gray shades, with a slightly deeper hue in the fields than on the devices. Other than a minute trace of a reeding mark, in the upper right obverse field, just to the left of star 10, the beautifully struck surfaces are seemingly pristine. Population: 1 in 67, 0 finer (10/03). (#60564) (PCGS# 60564)
