Attractive 1865 Copper-Nickel
Indian Cent, Judd-404, PR64
1865 1C One Cent, Judd-404, Pollock-473, Low R.7, PR64 NGC.
Design. The obverse is the regular-issue design for the 1865 Indian cent, with a Plain 5 in the date. There is minute repunching on the top of the 1, and a diamond-shaped die chip extends from the ribbon into the neck. The reverse has light die polish lines from the second arrow to the border, both dies as described for Snow PR-2. Struck in copper-nickel on a thick planchet with a plain edge.

Commentary. Andrew Pollock records the weight of this piece as 71.1. grains, one of the thick planchet examples. Others are known on a thin planchet, with a weight of about 48 grains. This is apparently a different die pair from other known examples of Judd-404, which Richard Snow identifies as his PR-1. There are also other examples known from at least two different Fancy 5 obverse dies.

The June 1977 Stack's sale that was the source for this piece offered an extensive collection of 42 different pattern Flying Eagle and Indian cents, a remarkable offering.

Physical Description. A gorgeous, boldly detailed proof with only a few tiny contact marks and lines on each side. The reverse has a minuscule planchet defect on the rim at 3 o'clock. Lovely pale pink toning graces the light tan surfaces. NGC Census: 3 in PR64, 1 finer. PCGS Population: 2 in PR64, 5 finer (12/08).

Provenance. Ex: Great Eastern Sale (Paramount, 9/1974); Stack's (6/1977), lot 381.
