Extremely Rare 1865 Two Cent
1865 2C Two Cents, Judd-409A, Pollock-479, High R.7, MS66
Pattern In Nickel
Design. Both obverse and reverse are the regular two cent dies of the year. The obverse is the Fancy 5 variety. Struck in nickel with a plain edge.
Commentary. A rare and popular issue that began appearing in auction catalogs as early as 1869 (Mason, 10/1869, lot 516). Nickel is an extremely hard metal, making it almost impossible to strike good-quality coins with the technology available in early 1865. The difficulties of the striking process account for the unfinished, granular areas on the surfaces of all examples seen.
Physical Description. Attractive pale iridescent silver and gold toning, with satiny luster. A few granular areas near the date and inside the wreath on the reverse are characteristic of this issue. This is the lone example of this rare Judd-409A issue that NGC has certified in any grade, and the finest certified at PCGS are two MS64 examples (11/08).
Provenance. Ex: Public Auction Sale (Stack's, 1/1987), lot 496; Frank F. Sprinkle Collection (Stack's, 6/1988), lot 450.
