Description

High-End 1865 Three Cent Nickel
Pattern, Judd-413, PR65 Brown

1865 3C Three Cent Nickel, Judd-413, Pollock-484, R.5, PR65 Brown NGC.
Design.
Both obverse and reverse dies are the designs used on regular-issue three cent nickel coinage in 1865. Struck in copper with a plain edge.

Commentary.
Ostensibly a die trial piece, but the number of pieces extant is more than would be required to test the dies. Most likely struck for sale to collectors. The date shows evidence of recutting. The obverse die was used to strike regular proofs of this date.

Physical Description.
Iridescent red and blue toning creates exceptional eye appeal. Tied for second finest graded. NGC Census: 1 in PR65 Brown, 7 finer either by numerical grade or designation. PCGS Population: 1 in PR65 Brown; 2 finer (12/08).

Provenance.
Ex: Corrado Romano Collection (Stack's, 6/1987), lot 837.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two. (PCGS# 60594)
