Description:
High-End 1865 Half Eagle Pattern
Judd-446, PR66 Brown
1865 $5 Five Dollar, Judd-446, Pollock-518, High R.6, PR66 Brown NGC.
Design.
The obverse die is the regular design for the year. The reverse is the design adopted in 1866, with the scroll over the eagle's head and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST added. Struck in copper with a reeded edge.

Commentary.
A true transitional pattern, struck in 1865. More than a dozen pieces survive, leading experts to conclude that some examples may be restrikes from the 1870s. The first auction appearance of Judd-446 was in the Idler Collection (Haseltine, 4/1870), lot 225. Specimens of Judd-450 (eagle in copper) and Judd-453 (double eagle in copper) were also offered in that sale for the first time. The patterns were often sold as sets in the 1870s. Idler was well known for his connections at the Mint, which gives credence to the speculation about restrikes.

Physical Description.
Fully struck with fine detail on all the devices. The coin has a wire rim. Original mint red blends with attractive lilac toning on virtually undisturbed surfaces. Census: 5 in 66 Brown, 0 finer (11/08). The finest at PCGS is a single 65 Brown.

Provenance.
Ex: T. Henry Allen Collection (Stack's, 2/1977), lot 1140.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two. (PCGS# 60633)
