Description:
Popular 1865 Shield Nickel Pattern
Judd-418, PR66 Cameo
1865 5C Shield Five Cents, Judd-418, Pollock-490, High R.6, PR66 Cameo NGC.
Design.
The obverse is the traditional Shield nickel design used for regular-issue coinage in 1865. The reverse features the Without Rays design adopted in 1867. Struck in nickel with a plain edge.

Commentary.
There is little doubt that the present issue was struck for sale to collectors circa 1870. The obverse shows many die cracks, while the reverse die has been polished to remove the telltale signs of repeated use. The overzealous polishing has resulted in loss of detail in the letters D, S, and A in UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

Physical Description.
A perfectly preserved example, with brilliant, untoned surfaces. The devices are heavily frosted and present a stark contrast against the deeply mirrored fields. NGC Census: 2 in PR66 Cameo, 1 finer. PCGS Population: 3 in PR66, none finer, and none with the Cameo designation in any grade (12/08).

Provenance.
Ex: Fraser Collection (Stack's, 3/1978), lot 609.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two. (PCGS# 60600)
