Description:
Historic 1866 Washington
Five Cent Pattern Struck in Nickel
Judd-470, PR64 Cameo
1866 5C Five Cents, Judd-470, Pollock-562, Low R.6, PR64 Cameo NGC.
Design.
On the obverse, a portrait of George Washington faces right, the legend IN GOD WE TRUST above, and the date below. A wreath of laurel on the reverse encloses the so-called Short 5, with the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around. Struck in nickel, with a plain edge.

Commentary.
Collecting Washingtonia was extremely popular in the 1850s and 1860s. Mint Director James Ross Snowden was particularly anxious to obtain needed specimens for the Mint Cabinet. The large number of Washington five cent patterns created in 1866 may have originated with this trend in mind. USPatterns.com estimates a population of fewer than 12 survivors.

Physical Description.
An attractive, near-Gem example of this popular pattern. The fields are well mirrored and the devices sharply defined. A small number of contact marks are scattered about the fields, consistent with the grade. Above-average eye appeal. NGC Census: 1 in PR64 Cameo, 4 finer. PCGS Population: 5 in PR64, 8 finer, none as a Cameo in any grade (12/08).

Provenance.
Ex: Stack's private treaty transaction.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two. (PCGS# 60666)
