1866 Washington Five Cent Muling
Judd-479, PR63
'Struck on Crude Planchet'

1866 5C Five Cents, Judd-479, Pollock-569, R.8, PR63 PCGS. This unusual muling has a Washington obverse with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST paired with a regular With Rays nickel reverse. Struck in white metal with a plain edge. The interesting story of these pieces, which were also struck in nickel, copper, and brass is related on the USPatterns.com website: "This muling is believed to have been struck outside the mint from dies sold as scrap metal which were purchased by Joseph Mickley. Many of these coins ended up in the Crosby collection. It is not known if Mickley or Crosby was the actual minter of these coins." The piece resembles a splasher, only thicker. There appears to have been no collar used, and the planchet split in several areas around the rim. Each side shows varying areas of light and dark gray patina. (NGC ID# 5WDR, PCGS# 60675)
