Description

1866 Shield Nickel Pattern, Judd-489

1866 5C Shield Five Cents, Judd-489, Pollock-577, Low R.6, PR66 PCGS. The obverse has a shield design similar to that adopted for the regular issue Shield nickel, except that the motto IN GOD WE TRUST is expressed in smaller letters and the date is divided by the ball at the base of the shield. On the reverse, the numeral 5 is surrounded by a laurel wreath, with the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the rim. Struck in nickel with a plain edge. This is the second Shield nickel design with a small motto and split date. Nickel examples are known on both thin 54 grain and thick 75 grain planchets. This appears to be a thin planchet striking. Streaky gray-golden patina cover each side with significant underlying mint brilliance. A well-preserved example whose only flaw are a few tiny specks of carbon on each side.(#60685) (PCGS# 60685)
