1866 5C Shield Five Cents, Judd-507, Pollock-591, R.5, PR65 PCGS....
Transitional 1866 No Rays Shield Nickel1866 5C Shield Five Cents, Judd-507, Pollock-591, R.5, PR65 PCGS. This transitional pattern lacks the rays found on regular issue 1866 Shield nickels. Struck in nickel with a plain edge. The reverse differs slightly from 1867 No Rays business strikes, since a star points to the center of the first A in AMERICA, rather than between AM. Some rare 1867 proofs were struck from this reverse subtype, which is believed to be the first No Rays die. The fields on this piece are bright and deeply reflective, and each side shows just a bit of light patina. A lovely, Gem proof example of this popular Shield nickel pattern. (PCGS# 60703)
