Attractive Proof Shield Nickel Pattern Judd-508, Pollock-592, High R.6, PR64 Brown NGC

1866 5C Shield Five Cents, Judd-508, Pollock-592, High R.6, PR64 Brown NGC. Struck from a regular obverse die of the 1866 Shield nickel, while the reverse prototypes the No Rays design that was produced for circulation the following year. Struck in copper with a plain edge. The prominent reverse 5 is die doubled. The deep chocolate-brown patina is modified by red-orange iridescence on each side, and by milky sky-blue toning near the reverse center. Neither NGC nor PCGS has certified a Red example of Judd-508. Census: 3 in 64, 1 finer (7/06). (NGC ID# 29L7, PCGS# 60704)
