Description:
Elusive 1866 Shield, No Rays Transitional
Five Cent Pattern Struck in Copper
Judd-508, PR64 Brown
1866 5C Shield Five Cents, Judd-508, Pollock-592, High R.6, PR64 Brown NGC.
Design.
The obverse features the standard design used to strike regular-issue Shield nickels in 1866. The reverse die is the No Rays design adopted for use in 1867. Struck in copper with a plain edge.

Commentary.
An important transitional pattern. Striking problems with the reverse used in 1866 necessitated the removal of the rays between the stars. The new reverse was adopted in mid-1867, so there are two major Shield nickel varieties in that year.

Physical Description.
Sharply struck, with fine detail on all devices. Iridescent lavender, blue, and green toning over reflective proof surfaces. The fields are remarkably free of handling marks, with only a reverse scratch near the UN in UNITED noted for pedigree purposes. NGC Census: NGC has certified four PR64 Brown including this piece, with two PR65 Red and Browns and a PR66 Brown finer. PCGS Population: 1 in PR64 Brown, 8 finer (12/08).

Provenance.
Ex: Nate Smith Collection (Stack's, 3/1973), lot 440.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two. (PCGS# 60704)
