Description:
Pleasing 1867 Coronet
Five Cent Nickel
Judd-566, PR65
1867 5C Five Cents, Judd-566, Pollock-627, Low R.6, PR65 NGC.
Design. The obverse features a bust of Liberty facing left, wearing a coronet, surrounded by the legend and date. The denomination is within a laurel wreath that is close to the edges on the reverse, with a tiny IN GOD WE TRUST above. CENTS is in a straight line. Struck in nickel with a plain edge.

Commentary. Judd-566 rates as one of the more plentiful five cent patterns of the 1865 to 1867 period, with about two dozen known. In addition to the patterns struck in nickel, examples were also struck in copper with only about half a dozen known.

Physical Description. Brilliant light gray surfaces with faint champagne toning have satiny luster rather than the deeply mirrored appearance of most proof patterns. A few faint hairlines and contact marks over striated surfaces prevent a higher grade. NGC Census: 3 in PR65, 4 finer. PCGS Population: 4 in PR65, 1 finer (12/08).

Provenance. Ex: Stack's private treaty.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two. (PCGS# 60776)
