Gem Shield Nickel Pattern, Judd-5731867 5C Shield Five Cents, Judd-573, Pollock-650, Low R.6, PR65 Red and Brown PCGS. Incorrectly identified on the PCGS holder as Judd-572. A die trial striking of the 1867 No Rays Shield nickel, struck in copper with a plain edge. The position of the reverse stars relative to the A in STATES, the E IN STATES, the E in CENTS, and the T in CENTS suggest that this reverse die is the same used to coin 1867 proof Shield nickels. Per Pollock (1994), this is Reverse B. Sharply struck with dynamic reflectivity noted in the fields. The surfaces are toned in variegated shades of crimson, magenta, and yellow-green. Scattered flyspecks and a faint fingerprint fragment, on the left reverse field, keep this piece from an even higher grade. Population: 3 in 65, 0 finer (11/06). (PCGS# 70783)
