Description

1868 'Postage Currency' Ten Cent Pattern
Judd-641, PR65

1868 10C Ten Cents, Judd-641, Pollock-713, Low R.7, PR65 NGC. CAC. The obverse is the regular issue design of the Seated Liberty dime except with no date. The reverse is similar to the regular issue Seated Liberty design with the date and a star inside the wreath. Struck in nickel with a reeded edge. Numismatic researcher David Cassel has researched this and other related issues, all included under the broad category as "postage currency." His research shows that this pattern issue was actually coined in 1863 from a die that was incorrectly dated 1868. Brilliant throughout, the deeply mirrored fields show moderately frosted devices. Struck on a slightly granular planchet, the coin itself does not show any mentionable problems. (PCGS# 60859)
