Interesting 1868 Ten Cent Pattern in
Nickel, Judd-641, PR65

1868 10C Ten Cents, Judd-641, Pollock-713, Low R.7, PR65 PCGS. A curious pattern coin, the Judd-641 almost appears as though it was decided to put as many elements as possible on the reverse while putting as few as possible on the obverse. The obverse includes just the usual Seated Liberty motif and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA on the periphery, with nothing in the exergue. The reverse appears much the same as on a Seated Liberty dime, with the addition of the date below ONE DIME and a large six-pointed star joining the two halves of the agricultural wreath. Struck in nickel with a reeded edge. The Judd ninth edition notes that "research by David Cassel has revealed that these coins were struck in 1863 from a die erroneously dated 1868. The obverse without date is the same as that used in 1863 to strike [Judd]-331." This example is a problem-free silver-gray Gem, with considerable cameo contrast and certified in a green-label holder. (PCGS# 60859)
