Description:
The Kosoff-Pittman 1868 Ten Cent Pattern
Judd-647, PR66, Similar to the
Large Cent Design of a Decade Earlier
1868 10C Ten Cents, Judd-647, Pollock-720, Low R.6, PR66 PCGS. CAC. Ex: Pittman. The obverse features the almost identical design used on large cents from 1843 to 1857, while the reverse is similar except that TEN CENTS is in the center of the wreath. Struck in nickel with a plain edge. The 1 and final 8 in the date are repunched, and the top of a stray letter appears between AM in AMERICA. This earlier die state lacks the die crack above the denomination. A popular pattern due to the enigmatic return of the obsolete large cent obverse design. A well struck and impressively preserved Premium Gem with light ice-blue and pinkish patina.
Ex: ANA Convention sale (Abe Kosoff, 1958), lot 51, where it sold for $50; John Jay Pittman Collection (Akers, 10/1997), lot 795, where it realized $5,170; Portland Signature (Heritage, 3/2004), lot 6653; which brought $4,370; Milwaukee ANA (Heritage, 8/2007), lot 2725, which realized $5,175; Orlando FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2008), lot 3594, which garnered $8,625.
