1868 5C Five Cents, Judd-624, Pollock-693, Low R.6, PR61 NGC....
1868 Five Cent, Judd-624, Broad Planchet, PR611868 5C Five Cents, Judd-624, Pollock-693, Low R.6, PR61 NGC.
Design. The obverse is similar to the regular-issue three cent nickel, while the reverse has a large numeral 5 with small CENTS below, a laurel wreath encircling. IN GOD WE TRUST is in tiny letters above. Struck on a broad planchet in nickel with a plain edge.
Commentary. Between regular and broad planchets, plain or reeded edge, and nickel, copper, and aluminum strikings, it would be possible to assemble a type set composed just of the 1868 five cent patterns. The rarest confirmed variety is the Judd-629, aluminum, plain edge, regular-size planchet, of which less than a half-dozen are estimated to exist.
Physical Description. Powder-gray and pinkish-silver surfaces appear to have a slight cameo appearance due to the broad flan. Some light haze and flecks in the fields account for the grade, but there is still plenty of appeal remaining. NGC Census: 1 in PR61, 9 finer. PCGS Population: 1 in PR61, 17 finer (12/08).
Provenance. Ex: Stack's private treaty.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two. (PCGS# 60841)
