Description:
1869 10C Ten Cents, Judd-717, Pollock-797, R.7, PR64 Red PCGS. 30.86 grains. The obverse is similar to the regular issue, but without the date in the exergual area. This so-called Second Reverse has SIL. NIC. COP. in larger letters, with the date below, in a smaller font, and slightly curved. Although Judd listed this as the second reverse, it is actually the first striking with the no date obverse die; later strikings with the obverse die have a polishing scratch in the die at the base of Liberty's feet. The coin is cherry-red, has a reeded edge, and has a specific gravity of 8.9. The reeding on this coin is different than the reeding on the J-715 as well as the other coins using this obverse and a different reverse. The purpose of the patterns with this obverse/reverse was experimental, to test the alloy of Koulz (Roulz?), a German chemist. (A theory proved recently by David Cassel, a specialist in this series). His 26% silver, 33% nickel, and 41% copper mixture formed an unacceptable alloy, primarily because silver and nickel are totally incompatible. Other strikings with this die combination were made in silver, copper, and coin nickel. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. The coin has bright, fiery-red surfaces that reflect a mostly copper composition. However, in the center of the reverse there is an irregular splash of whiteness, probably from either silver or nickel alloy that did not mix properly with the copper. The fields show evidence of heavy die striations, which have in turn imparted a very appealing reflectivity to the fields. There are a few small specks of carbon on each side that help to identify this important pattern. Probably even scarcer than the R.7 rating in Pollock. Ex: Dunham; Olsen; The Palace Collection--Farouk (Sotheby's, February-March, 1954), lot 1831 as AW-796; Schulman 1954; Robert L. Hughes; acquired by Gene Wolfe from RLH in 1977. (#80943) (#80943) (PCGS# 80943)

Needless to say I was overwhelmed by the results of the auction and I truly believe it was Jill’s efforts in promoting and displaying the piece that brought in the extra value.
