Description

PR66 Deep Cameo 1869 Quarter Eagle
Judd-770 Pattern in Aluminum

1869 $2 1/2 Quarter Eagle, Judd-770, Pollock-855, Low R.7, PR66 Deep Cameo PCGS. CAC. Regular dies trial of the 1869 quarter eagle. Struck in aluminum with a reeded edge. There was probably no real need for an aluminum quarter eagle dies trial in 1869; USPatterns.com states "these were actually deliberately struck for sale to collectors as part of complete sets." It is also worth noting that while aluminum has a reputation as an inexpensive metal today, it was considered precious from its discovery until the invention of the Hall-Héroult commercial process in 1886. The present coin has outstanding field-to-device contrast and powerful mirrors with only slight evidence of clouding. Carefully preserved and beautiful, and easily among the finest survivors known. (PCGS# 61001)
