Popular 1869 Standard Silver Half Dollar Pattern
Struck in Silver, Judd-754, Near-Gem Proof

1869 50C Standard Silver Half Dollar, Judd-754, Pollock-838, R.5, PR64 NGC.
Design.
A right-facing Liberty features a headband with LIBERTY in raised letters and a single star at the front. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA dominates the upper rim, with IN GOD WE TRUST in a ribbon below. On the reverse 50 / CENTS is within an oak and laurel wreath, with STANDARD SILVER at the upper border and the date below. Two six-pointed stars decorate the lower field. Struck in silver with a reeded edge.

Commentary.
Interestingly, the Standard Silver dime and quarter patterns of 1869 featured obverse dies used only in that year, whereas the five obverse dies used to strike the 1869 Standard Silver half dollar patterns were also used to produce 1870-dated Standard Silver fifty cent patterns. This issue, Judd-754, is one of the more available patterns in the series, although it can only be considered "common" in relation to other patterns of the era. As of (11/08), NGC and PCGS have documented a total of 63 examples in all grades. The number of auction appearances in the past 10 years is approximately half of that number.

Physical Description.
Well, but not fully struck, with reflective surfaces, this offering boasts a subtle blend of russet and lavender coloration over dove-gray toning. Three insignificant yellowish toning spots around the ND of STANDARD on the reverse will make this piece unquestionably identifiable to future researchers. NGC Census: 3 in PR64, 9 finer. PCGS Population: 13 in PR64, 5 finer (12/08).

Provenance.
Ex: King Farouk; Palace Collections of Egypt (Sotheby's, 2/1954), lot 1828 (with auction tag attested to by Sol Kaplan); Lester Merkin Coins (2/1971), lot 881.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two. (PCGS# 60984)
