Memorable 1869 Standard Silver Half Dollar Pattern
Judd-755, Superb Gem Proof
Tied for Finest Certified

1869 50C Standard Silver Half Dollar, Judd-755, Pollock-839, High R.6, PR67 NGC.
Design.
A right-facing Liberty features a headband with LIBERTY in raised letters and a single star at the front. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA dominates the upper periphery, with IN GOD WE TRUST in a ribbon below. On the reverse 50 / CENTS is within an oak and laurel wreath, with STANDARD SILVER at the upper border and the date below. Two six-pointed stars decorate the lower field. Struck in silver with a plain edge.

Commentary.
The plain edge variant of this die marriage is approximately three times as scarce as the reeded edge version, yet the historical prices realized at auction do not reflect the disparity in availability. Such is the case for many other rarities in which the supply is low, but the demand is also limited. However, the research efforts of pattern specialists in recent years--namely the release of the much-improved Judd reference and the USPatterns.com website--are helping to draw attention to the patterns field, and demand is on the rise.

Physical Description.
A Superb Gem proof coin--pattern or otherwise--should possess not only pristine surface quality, but also substantial eye appeal. The current offering fully delivers on both counts. Pleasing amber toning at the peripheries is notably deeper in hue than in the centers. The mirrors are breathtakingly deep, and we find no flaws warranting disclosure. The slight weakness in the IB of LIBERTY on the obverse, and in the central reverse detail, is inherent to the issue, as are the die file marks in the upper reverse field. This piece is one of three documented at the PR67 level at NGC, including one with a Cameo designation, and no examples have earned a higher grade (11/08). The two finest of the 11 specimens graded by PCGS reside at the PR65 level. A stunning pattern that is sure to elicit aggressive bidding activity.

Provenance.
Ex: Stack's private treaty transaction.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two. (PCGS# 60985)
