Description

1870 'Coin Without a Country'
Judd-996 Standard Silver Dollar, PR64

1870 $1 Standard Silver Dollar, Judd-996, Pollock-1127, High R.7, PR64 NGC.
Design.
A seated Liberty faces left, with 13 stars ringing the rim and the date 1870 in exergue. She holds a shield with her right hand and an olive branch in her left. A cap rests atop a Liberty pole, and a scroll crosses the shield with LIBERTY thereon. On the reverse a wreath of corn and cotton encloses 1 / DOLLAR, the latter in an upcurving arc, with STANDARD in tiny letters at the upper rim. Struck in silver with a reeded edge.

Commentary.
The Judd reference notes this as the first appearance of the silver dollar denomination in the Standard Silver series, and that there is no reference to the country of origin on this "illogical" die combination. USPatterns.com estimates that perhaps a dozen are known.

Physical Description.
The fields are brightly reflective on each side. The obverse has an even gray patina, while the reverse shows almost no color and is considerably brighter than the obverse. Fully struck in all areas and essentially problem-free. NGC Census: 1 in PR64, 1 finer. PCGS Population: 1 in PR64, none finer (12/08).

Provenance.
Ex: Bowers and Ruddy Rare Coin Review 44, p. 6; Steig Collection (Bowers and Ruddy, 9/1982), lot 1798; Rusbar Collection (Bowers and Merena, 9/1990), lot 772.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two. (NGC ID# 26W2, PCGS# 61243)
