Description:
Pleasantly Toned 1870 Standard
Silver Dime, Judd-825, PR66

1870 10C Standard Silver Ten Cents, Judd-825, Pollock-915, Low R.7, PR66 NGC.
Design.
A left-facing seated Liberty holds a shield at her right side and an olive branch in her left hand. A scroll inscribed with LIBERTY flows across the shield, and a crudely fashioned cap and pole are suspended in the background. UNITED STATES / OF AMERICA occupies the periphery with the date, 1870, in exergue. On the reverse 10 / CENTS is within an open wreath of cotton and corn, tied with a bow at the bottom. STANDARD--in small letters--is found at the edge above the wreath, and the rim is unusually wide. Struck in silver with a reeded edge.

Commentary.
Nine distinct classes of 1870 dime patterns are known, including seven Standard Silver issues such as the current offering. The first eight of the nine dime groups comprise six variations: silver, copper, and aluminum, each with either a reeded or plain edge. The result is a total of 51 different dime patterns dated 1870--more than any other year by a wide margin.

Physical Description.
Attractive cobalt and azure hues intermingle with peach toning throughout. The average strike of this Premium Gem proof is redeemed by substantial eye appeal and remarkably clean surfaces. Pollock (1994) notes that the current offering weighs 38.4 grains and has a diameter of 0.703 inches. The die alignment is 170 degrees. NGC Census: 1 in PR66, none finer. PCGS Population: 1 in PR66, none finer (12/08).

Provenance. Ex: Bareford Collection (Stack's, 10/1981).
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two.
