Description

High R.7 1870 Dime Pattern, PR67 Cameo
Likely the Finest Known Judd-835

1870 10C Ten Cents, Judd-835, Pollock-926, High R.7, PR67 Cameo NGC.
Design.
A left-facing seated Liberty holds a shield at her right side and an olive branch in her left hand. A scroll inscribed with LIBERTY flows across the shield and a crudely fashioned cap and pole are suspended in the background. UNITED STATES / OF AMERICA occupies the periphery with the date, 1870, in exergue. The reverse is that of the regular dime issue for the year. Struck in aluminum with a reeded edge.

Commentary.
A rare pattern, in the strictest sense. Andrew Pollock documented only two specimens--this piece and the King Farouk pattern that was part of Sotheby's February 1954 Palace Collections of Egypt sale. The number of auction appearances over the past few decades indicates that fewer than six examples are extant in all grades, and most of those pieces are likely in tightly held collections. In any case, this Superb Gem Cameo piece is quite likely the finest known, as well as one of the very few available.

Physical Description.
Considering the aluminum composition, this blast-white specimen boasts astoundingly deep mirrors. The devices display considerable contrast with the mirrored fields, fully justifying the NGC Cameo designation. This is a well-struck Superb Gem Cameo proof and the only Judd-835 documented in the NGC Census Report as of (11/08). PCGS has certified only a single example of the Judd-835, a PR65 non-Cameo piece.

Provenance.
Ex: Estates of Philip M. Mann, Jr. and Glenn B. Smedley (Bowers and Merena, 9/1988), lot 591.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two. (NGC ID# 29VB, PCGS# 61079)
