Very Rare Aluminum Striking of William Barber's Seated Liberty Design, Judd-8801870 25C Standard Silver Quarter Dollar, Judd-880, Pollock-978, R.7, PR65 PCGS. William Barber's Seated Liberty design is paired here with a Standard Silver reverse that has 25 CENTS in the center, surrounded by a wreath of cotton and corn, with the word STANDARD above. Struck in aluminum with a reeded edge. These were issued in complete sets in 1870 with fewer than half a dozen known today in aluminum. This is the second example of this rare pattern we have offered since July. The other piece was also a Gem and showed a couple of light planchet cracks. This piece has a curious, unfinished oval area in the left obverse field. The surfaces show no signs of oxidation and the fields are deeply mirrored with strongly contrasted, frosted devices. Outstanding quality and rarity.(#61124) (PCGS# 61124)
