Description

1870 Standard Silver Quarter
Judd-894, PR64

1870 25C Standard Silver Quarter Dollar, Judd-894, Pollock-1001, R.5, PR64 NGC.
Design.
The Liberty Head design, no stars on the tiara. On the reverse an open agricultural wreath encloses 25 CENTS, date 1870 below. STANDARD is at the upper rim. Struck in silver with a reeded edge.

Commentary.
At R.5, this is another widely available Standard Silver quarter, while still rare by the standards of U.S. numismatics. Judd-894 is known on both thick and thin planchets, although the difference is not designated in either attribution system. Pollock traced two thin flan variants in his 1994 treatise, but cautions that "it is likely that several exist." The thin planchet patterns weight approximately 77 grains, whereas the thick pieces examined measure between 84.3 and 84.4 grains. The piece offered here was struck on a thick planchet.

Physical Description.
Tinges of pinkish-lilac and ice-blue on both sides enhance the appeal, despite the presence of some minor contact in the fields. A well struck and attractive coin. Census: 7 in 64, 10 finer including a handful of Cameo pieces (10/08).

Provenance.
Ex: Numismatic Gallery (1937), "AW-970," $10; Lee and Peter L. Shaffer Collections (Superior, 9/1988), lot 2848.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two.
