Description

Gorgeous 1870 Copper Half Dollar
Judd-936, PR65 Brown

1870 50C Half Dollar, Judd-936, Pollock-1042, High R.6, PR65 Brown NGC.
Design.
A seated figure of Liberty faces left on the obverse with 13 stars surrounding. The date is below, a free-standing Liberty pole is behind, and LIBERTY is inscribed on a scroll crossing a small shield. Paired with a regular-dies Seated half reverse, struck in copper with a plain edge.

Commentary.
The same design as Judd-935, but with a plain edge that was produced by a smooth, unreeded collar. Like Judd-935, about 15 or 16 examples of this copper pattern are known.

Physical Description.
A remarkable display of medium green and gold iridescence appears over the fully and deeply mirrored fields on both sides of this Gem proof. A few tiny spots are evident but are of little consequence. The obverse and reverse design motifs are fully lustrous, creating an excellent cameo appearance. NGC Census: 1 in PR65 Brown, none finer with the Brown Designation, however there are also a PR65 Red and Brown, a PR66 Red and Brown, and a PR64 Red in the Census. PCGS Population: None in PR65 Brown, none finer with the Brown designation, however there are also 2 PR65 Red and Brown pieces, a PR64 Red and Brown, and a PR65 Red in the Population (12/08).

Provenance.
Ex: Stack's (8/1971), lot 466.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two.
