Description:
Beautiful 1870 Standard Silver
Half Dollar, Judd-929
PR65 Red and Brown
1870 50C Standard Silver Half Dollar, Judd-929, Pollock-1048, R.7, PR65 Red and Brown NGC.
Design.
The obverse portrays a seated figure of Liberty with shield and olive branch. A scroll is draped over the shield with the word LIBERTY inscribed in raised letters; a Liberty pole stands behind the shield. Thirteen stars surround the central devices, with the date in the exergue. The reverse features the denomination 50 / CENTS encircled by an agricultural wreath, with the word STANDARD spelled out above. Struck in copper with a reeded edge.

Commentary.
William Barber designed the beautiful obverse of this pattern, one of his finest designs. There is some controversy concerning the design, as Pollock and Judd both list the variety with LIBERTY in incuse letters on the scroll, while USPatterns.com has seen only the raised letters design. The present example has raised letters. USPatterns.com estimates fewer than a dozen specimens are extant.

Physical Description.
An attractive specimen with iridescent crimson and gold toning. A few unobtrusive handling marks near star 1 act as a pedigree marker. Tied with one other example at PCGS for finest certified in the Red and Brown designation. NGC Census: This piece is the only Judd-929 certified at NGC. PCGS Population: 3 Judd-929 pieces have been certified by PCGS; they grade PR66 Brown, PR65 Red and Brown, and PR66 Red (12/08).

Provenance.
Ex: Lloyd M. Higgins (Bowers and Merena, 1/1998), lot 699, listed as Judd-929A because of the raised letters controversy.
