Description

Copper 1870 Standard Silver Half, Judd-930
PR64 Red and Brown Cameo

1870 50C Standard Silver Half Dollar, Judd-930, Pollock-1035, High R.7, PR64 Red and Brown Cameo NGC. This William Barber design features Liberty seated and facing left, surrounded by 13 stars. She steadies a shield with her right hand, while her left hand holds an olive branch. A Liberty pole is partly concealed behind the shield. A scroll crossing the shield features a raised inscription of LIBERTY. The date is centered below. The reverse has a wreath of corn and cotton, with 50 CENTS inside and STANDARD above. This muling of pattern Seated and Standard Silver dies led to the absence of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Struck in copper with a plain edge. Precisely struck and prominently mirrored with predominantly peach-red surfaces, though glimmers of blue-green are noted at the margins. Aqua freckles on the upper reverse rim identify the present piece. (PCGS# 71176)
