1870 50C Standard Silver Half Dollar, Judd-940, Pollock-1053, 1067, High R.6, PR65 NGC.
Design.
The central figure of the obverse is a bust of Liberty facing right, wearing a cap with two large stars and a ribbon inscribed LIBERTY in incuse letters. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcs above, with a scroll inscribed IN GOD WE TRUST below. The reverse features the denomination 50 / CENTS and the date encircled in an agricultural wreath, with the word STANDARD above. Struck in silver with a plain edge.

Pollock-1053 is a variety of Judd-940, distinguished by the position of the tip of Liberty's cap under the center of the second S in STATES. USPatterns.com estimates fewer than a dozen examples survive.

Physical Description.

A pleasing example of this sought-after pattern. Census: 2 in 65, 1 in 65 Cameo, 0 finer (11/08). The finest at PCGS are a trio of PR64 specimens.

Provenance.
Ex: Public Auction Sale (Merkin, 6/1972), lot 328.
