Description:
Incredible 1870 Standard Silver
Aluminum Half Dollar
Judd-955, PR65 Cameo
1870 50C Standard Silver Half Dollar, Judd-955, Pollock-1099, High R.7, PR65 Cameo NGC.
Design.
A bust of Liberty faces right. She wears a LIBERTY-inscribed diadem, and her hair is tightly bound with a ribbon. IN GOD WE TRUST reposes within a scroll below, while UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounds the portrait. The reverse has a wreath of corn and cotton with 50 / CENTS / 1870 inside and STANDARD centered above. Struck in aluminum with a reeded edge.

Commentary.
The aluminum variety of this design combination, with less than half a dozen reeded edge pieces known. A similar number of plain edge examples are also known, cataloged as Judd-956.

Physical Description.
The cameo contrast that is evident on this Gem proof aluminum piece is absolutely amazing, with deeply mirrored fields around the lustrous devices. The strike on both sides is bold, especially for an aluminum piece. Of the five examples certified at both services, this piece is tied for numerically finest graded, and it is the only Cameo coin certified by either service. NGC Census: 1 in PR65 Cameo, none finer. PCGS Population: 3 in PR65 but lacking the Cameo designation, none finer (12/08).

Provenance.
Ex: Bowers and Merena (9/1988), lot 600.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two. (PCGS# 61201)
