Description

Gem Proof 1870 Judd-989 Pattern Half Dollar

1870 50C Standard Silver Half Dollar, Judd-989, Pollock-1118, Low R.7, PR65 Red and Brown PCGS. Ex: H.W. Bass, Jr. Standard Silver Design C: Liberty wears a headband inscribed LIBERTY with her hair tied in a bun as more fully described for Judd-708 with the reverse design of 1869. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. This may be one of the most aesthetically desirable patterns in the current auction with deeply mirrored fields, excellent contrast, and vivid toning. Both sides have deep cherry color with gold, lilac, and blue toning. A small spot in the right obverse field confirms the pedigree of this piece.
Ex: Julian Leidman (7/28/1972); Harry W. Bass, Jr. (Bowers and Merena, 5/1999), lot 1210.
From The Jones Beach Collection. (PCGS# 71235)
