One of the Finest Known Judd-818
1870 Half Dimes in Copper
PR67 Red and Brown

1870 H10C Half Dime, Judd-818, Pollock-907, Low R.7, PR67 Red and Brown NGC.
A seated Liberty faces left while supporting a shield with a scroll inscribed with LIBERTY on her right side and holding an olive branch in her left hand. A crudely fashioned cap and pole are suspended in the background. UNITED STATES / OF AMERICA occupies the periphery with the date, 1870, in exergue. A regular 1870 half dime reverse die was used to strike the Judd-815 through Judd-820 patterns. HALF DIME is enclosed within a wreath of corn, wheat, oak, and maple, tied with a bow at the bottom. Struck in copper with a plain edge.

Pattern researchers believe that less than 12 Judd-818 survivors exist today. By way of relatively fewer varieties and lower production totals, the half dime patterns of 1870 are far scarcer than the dimes, quarters, and fifty cent pieces of the same year. As one example, there are 16 half dime pattern varieties dated 1870, against a total of 51 dime issues.

Physical Description.
Per the ninth edition of United States Pattern Coins by Judd: "As is always the case with patterns of this era, copper strikings are very difficult to find in a combination of high grade and pleasing eye appeal." The current piece offers both attributes, and is the only PR67 Judd-818 pattern--regardless of color designation--graded by either service as of (11/08), with none finer. Pristine red surfaces confirm that this Superb Gem proof example was carefully preserved from the moment it left the Mint. NGC Census: 1 in PR67 Red and Brown, none finer. PCGS Population: none in PR67 Red and Brown, none finer in Red and Brown, with a single PR64 Red (12/08).

Provenance. Ex: Stack's private treaty transaction.
