Description:
1870 William Barber Seated Liberty Half
Judd-934, PR65 Deep Cameo
1870 P50C Half Dollar, Judd-934, Pollock-1040, Low R.7, PR65 Deep Cameo PCGS. CAC. William Barber's seated figure of Liberty faces left on the obverse. Thirteen stars surround Liberty with the date below. Liberty supports a shield with her right hand, and holds an olive branch in her left hand. A Liberty pole is behind the shield, a scroll crosses the shield and is inscribed LIBERTY in raised letters. The reverse is the type used for regular issue Seated halves. Struck in silver with a plain edge. Struck in a wide variety of metals, both with and without edge reeding, including silver, copper, and aluminum, but each issue is individually scarce. Only a dozen or so examples are known of this variant. The fields display evidence of heavy die polish that has given each side deeply reflective mirroring, this is then the background for the frosted white devices. Each side also is accented in peripheral rose and cobalt-blue toning. An exceptional Barber half dollar pattern. (PCGS# 61180)
