Description:
Extremely Rare 1871 Indian Princess Dollar
Judd-1126, PR63
1871 $1 Dollar, Judd-1126, Pollock-1262, R.8, PR63 NGC.
Design.
The obverse features Longacre's Indian Princess design with 13 stars on the flag behind Liberty, all in a plain field with the date below. Probably implemented by William Barber, since Longacre died in 1869. The reverse is the regular issue With Motto Seated Liberty design. A short, raised die line from the N of IN to the G of GOD identifies this as a regular issue proof die used only in 1871. Struck in silver with a reeded edge.

Commentary.
A number of pattern varieties dated between 1863 and 1873 use the regular With Motto Seated dollar reverse dies. Although certainly not exhaustive, we provide the following notes regarding the regular issue reverse dies used for proofs. Identified are four different reverse dies, with these characteristics.

1. A raised die line extends from the top right of the N of IN through the lower parts of G and O to the bottom edge of the ribbon below D. This die is observed on most or all proof Seated dollars from 1866 to 1868, the majority of 1869, and the minority of 1870.

2. Very slight doubling is observed on the tops of IN. This die is observed on a minority of 1869 proof dollars and most 1870 proof dollars.

3. A short, curved die line begins at the lower right side of N of IN and continues up through the lower left side of G, to the inner right side of that letter, just below the inside crossbar. This reverse die has only been observed on 1871 proof Seated dollars. It is also observed on the Judd-1126 dollar currently offered.

4. The entire motto is boldly doubled. Observed on 1872 and 1873 proof Seated dollars. It is also observed on 1872 Judd-1210.

Although admittedly brief, this reverse die study may help to determine when certain patterns were actually struck. For example, Reverse Die 1 is observed on at least one example of 1865 Judd-435, while Reverse Die 3 has been observed on an example of 1864 Judd-396.

Physical Description.
An amazing Select proof that exhibits excellent contrast, partly due to the combination of lustrous devices and fully mirrored fields, and partly due to the actual design, with an entirely plain field aside from the date. Slightly toned. NGC Census: Two pieces total -- this one, and one graded PR66 Cameo. PCGS Population: None (12/08).

Provenance.
