Announcement: Sunday & Tuesday Internet Coin Auctions and Weekly World and Ancient Coin Auctions move to Heritage Live!

Our Weekly Internet Coin Auctions and World and Ancient Coin Auctions are closing with live, online auctions on HA.com's Heritage Live! platform beginning with the Internet Coin Auction that ends Sunday, September 21st and the World and Ancient Coin Auction that ends on Thursday, September 25th. Each lot is offered one at a time, in lot number order, in live auctions beginning at 8:00 PM CT. During this part of the auction, live bidders will be on Heritage Live! competing with each other and with previously placed Internet bids. The lot opens, requests live bids, and then closes when the bidding is finished. There is no change in how you place your secret maximum bids during the week the auctions are open on HA.com. In addition, once bidding on HA.com ends, 2 hours before the live sessions start, you still have the option to leave proxy bids through Heritage Live!

For more information about Heritage Live!, please visit HA.com/live. If you have any questions about this exciting format change, please contact us at 800-872-6467 or Bid@HA.com.

Description:
1871 Indian Princess Silver Dollar, Judd-1127
R.8, PR63, Only Three-Four Known
1871 $1 Dollar, Judd-1127, Pollock-1263, R.8, PR63 NGC.
Design.
The obverse is of James B. Longacre's Indian Princess design, in a starless (plain) field, with date 1871 below and his initials J.B.L. at the lower right. The reverse is the regular-issue silver dollar die. Saul Teichman notes that "this reverse die is the same as the one used to strike 1866 copper dollars and at least some of the 1865 In God We Trust dollars." Struck in silver with a plain edge.

Commentary.
The year 1871 continued the striking in various metals and denominations of both the Standard Silver and Longacre's Indian Princess designs, here apparently developed by William Barber more than two years after Longacre's death on January 1, 1869. Of course, other designs by the new Mint chief engraver also began to appear in greater quantities as the decade wore on. Although this pattern bears Longacre's initials in posthumous tribute, some patterns of 1870 (Judd-1008 through 1019) bear his full name spelled out.

These coins were sold in complete five-piece sets from the half dime through silver dollar.

Physical Description.
Considerable cameo contrast appears on both sides, enhanced by the unadorned, barren obverse field. A few hairlines appear in those fields, but this design is still stunningly attractive. A few stray rose and gold highlights appear, but the coin is still mostly silver. USPatterns.com estimates that only three or four pieces exist. NGC Census: one in PR63 (this piece). PCGS Population: none.

Provenance.
Unknown. The grade and general appearance concord with the William R. "Rudy" Sieck coin (Bowers and Ruddy, 7/1981, lot 268, Proof-63), earlier from Byron Johnson and Robert L. Hughes--but plate-matching is inconclusive.
