Rarely Seen 1871 Double Eagle Die Trial in Copper, Judd-11761871 $20 Twenty Dollar, Judd-1176, Pollock-1318, R.7, PR64 Red PCGS. Both the obverse and reverse designs are the same used to coin regular issue double eagles. Although described as regular dies trial pieces, these were actually deliberately struck for sale to collectors as part of complete off-metal sets. Fewer than a half dozen copper strikings are believed known today. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. Rich red colors favor both sides, some of the highpoint areas are decorated with violet accents. An attractive, premium specimen.
