1871 50C Half Dollar, Judd-1109, Pollock-1245, R.7, PR65 ...
Exceptional Gem Condition Longacre-Designed Seated Liberty Half Dollar, Judd-11091871 50C Half Dollar, Judd-1109, Pollock-1245, R.7, PR65 Red and Brown PCGS. The obverse has Longacre's slightly modified second design for the Seated Liberty motif with thirteen stars on the flag. The central device of Liberty is set in the field without the often-seen stars around the rim. The reverse is from the regular issue fifty cent dies. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. Although designed by Longacre, this die pairing was apparently implemented by William Barber as Longacre died in 1869. Sold in 1871 as part of complete sets from the half dime to the silver dollar. This is a lovely Gem example that has deeply reflective fields. The original red luster has mellowed slightly with portions of each side showing brown and blue patina. (#71368) (PCGS# 71368)
