Description

1871 Standard Silver Half Dime in Copper
Judd-1060, PR66 Red and Brown

1871 H10C Standard Silver Half Dime, Judd-1060, Pollock-1195, Low R.7, PR66 Red and Brown NGC.
Design.
The obverse is the posthumous James B. Longacre Indian Princess design, in a starless field with date in exergue. The reverse shows 5 / CENTS, the latter in an upcurving arc, surrounded by a wreath of corn and cotton, with STANDARD in tiny letters at the upper rim. Struck in copper with a reeded edge.

Commentary.
Another numismatic delicacy made at a time when the Mint was rife with such antics; a production for private profit rather than public progress. The example offered here has been confined to the same collection since May 1975, where it was acquired as part of Stack's Cornell University sale. A total of 23 patterns were offered at that auction, although only five pieces were plated. This lot was not accompanied by a photograph, but the consignor's notes properly identified this pattern as lot 940 from that sale.

Physical Description.
Per Pollock (1994): 17.6 grains, 0.609 inches, 180 degree die alignment. This marvelous Premium Gem is justly deserving of its NGC designation. Pinkish-red highlights complement the well-struck, mark-free surfaces, further emphasized by the starless obverse field and near-Cameo field-device contrast. There are two PR66 Red and Brown pieces at NGC that are tied for numerically finest certified, the present specimen the only one awarded a for exceptional eye appeal (12/08). PCGS has certified 2 pieces as PR66 Red and Brown with none finer (12/08).

Provenance.
Ex: Cornell University (Stack's (5/1975), lot 940.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two.
