Description

Gilt 1872 Amazonian Eagle, J-1246

1872 $10 Barber's Amazonian Head Eagle, Judd-1246, Pollock-1388, Low R.7, PR63 Gilt NGC. William Barber's "Amazonian Gold" design, similar to the gold dollar pattern except the denomination is expressed as TEN DOL. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. A sharply struck piece with slightly mirrored fields and splendid yellow-gold color. Pale orange toning spots are evident, as are minor hairlines on each side. Both the obverse and the reverse have peripheral die cracks, rarely seen on these pattern issues. All of the flowing hair ends are thin and distant from each other or the devices. Star 1 is well below the bust tip. In relation to its diameter, the lettering is smaller and more widely spaced than on the lower denominations.
