Description

1872 Aluminum Dies Trial Quarter, PR65
Judd-1199, Strongly Contrasted

1872 25C Quarter Dollar, Judd-1199, Pollock-1339, High R.7, PR65 PCGS. CAC. Previously described as a regular dies trial, but in reality these pieces were actually struck by the Mint for sale to collectors. Struck in aluminum with a reeded edge. While struck for the collector market, the rarity of this pattern is undeniable. USPatterns.com estimates only two or three are known in aluminum. This appears to be the first time we have handled one of these pieces. Copper strikings also exist and fewer than a half dozen are believed known of those. Few post-striking defects can be found on this piece. The reverse does, however, show several planchet cracks. As with almost all aluminum patterns there is profound contrast evident between the fields and devices, but this piece was certified long before Cameo designations were accorded contrasted proofs. Completely brilliant throughout. (PCGS# 61470)
