Design. A coronet inscribed LIBERTY is surrounded by 13 stars with the date below. The reverse has the statutory legend around a wreath with the denomination and technical data inside, the bottom of the wreath is tied by a ribbon with IN GOD WE TRUST. Struck in silver with a reeded edge.
Commentary. As a group, most patterns are much rarer than this variety. At least 100 different examples are known. The Mint marketed six-piece pattern Trade dollar sets in 1873, the sets including Judd-1276. Also included were Judd-1281, 1293, 1310, 1315, and 1322.
Physical Description. Deep gray-gold toning masks the full mirrors on each side of this lovely Choice proof. The reverse is quite a bit brighter than the obverse. Both sides exhibit mild cameo contrast, and the devices are sharply detailed. Minor hairlines and contact marks prevent a higher grade. NGC Census: 3 in PR64, 7 finer. PCGS Population: 8 in PR64, 8 finer (12/08).
