Description:
Pleasing 1875 Twenty Cent Pattern
Unusual Design Error
Judd-1399, PR64
1875 20C Twenty Cents, Judd-1399, Pollock-1542, Low R.6, PR64 NGC.
Design.
The obverse features a seated figure of Liberty by the seashore, with an arc of 13 stars above and the date below. Liberty holds an olive branch in her right hand and rests her left hand on a globe with the word LIBERTY inscribed. A steamship is seen in the distance, and behind Liberty a wheat sheaf and two flags can be seen. The reverse is similar to the design used for regular coinage, except for minor leaf position changes. Struck in silver with a plain edge.

Commentary.
Q. David Bowers points out a curious error in this design. The smoke from the ship's smokestack is trailing behind the ship, but the sails are billowing forward, indicating the wind is blowing in the opposite direction. USPatterns.com estimates approximately one dozen examples of Judd-1399 are extant.

Physical Description.
The present coin is sharply struck, with fine detail on the hair and eagle's feathers. Light centers give way to iridescent golden-rose and blue toning, creating fantastic eye appeal. An attractive example of this unusual pattern. NGC Census: 2 in PR64, 5 finer. PCGS Population: 5 in PR64, 2 finer (12/08).

Provenance.
Ex: Auction '87 (Rarcoa, 8/1987), lot 1331.
