Description

Popular 1875 Twenty Cent Pattern
'Liberty at the Seashore'
Judd-1403, PR66

1875 20C Twenty Cents, Judd-1403, Pollock-1546, High R.6, PR66 NGC.
Design.
The obverse features a seated figure of Liberty by the seashore, with an arc of 13 stars above and the date below. Liberty holds an olive branch in her right hand and rests her left hand on a globe with the word LIBERTY inscribed. A steamship is seen in the distance, and behind Liberty a wheat sheaf and two flags can be seen. The reverse features the denomination 20 CENTS centered inside an olive wreath with the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around. Struck in silver with a plain edge.

Commentary.
The "Liberty at the Seashore" design was popular with Mint personnel despite the famous error in wind direction. The design was used in combination with three reverses on twenty cent patterns and, in modified form, on Trade dollar patterns as well. USPatterns.com estimates a surviving population of more than one dozen examples. The present example is a virtually unimprovable specimen of this popular design.

Physical Description.
The strike is extraordinary, with crisp detail on all devices. The centers are a lovely pink-gray, with deep blue toning outside. The overall eye appeal is outstanding. NGC Census: 2 in PR66, none finer. PCGS Population: The finest graded are two PR64 pieces (12/08).

Provenance.
Ex: Public Auction Sale (Stack's, 10/1986), lot 61.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two.
