Description:
Colorful 1875 Twenty Cent Pattern
Judd-1407, PR66 Cameo
1875 20C Twenty Cents, Judd-1407, Pollock 1550, Low R.6, PR66 Cameo NGC.
Design.
The obverse closely resembles Gobrecht's Seated Liberty design adopted for regular-issue coinage, but the date is in smaller letters and LIBERTY is incused. The reverse features the inscription 1/5 OF A DOLLAR centered in a laurel wreath, with the peripheral inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA above, and TWENTY CENTS below. Struck in silver with a plain edge.

Commentary.
This issue must have been a favorite of Mint Director Henry Linderman. There were five examples of Judd-1407 in his collection when it was sold by Lyman Low and J.W. Scott in 1888. USPatterns.com estimates a surviving population of more than one dozen examples.

Physical Description.
The deeply mirrored fields show just the slightest overlay of golden toning on each side. The devices are heavily frosted and present a stark cameo contrast against the illimitable depth of reflectivity in the fields. The finest certified at NGC, although PCGS has certified a PR66 non-Cameo piece (11/08).

Provenance.
Unknown.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two.
(PCGS# 61714)
